Martin's brave attempt ends on Saturday morning

As our Friday preview reported, Martin was passed fit after Free Practice 1 and rode on Friday only six days after breaking his wrist at Phillip Island, although he cut his afternoon short. He went out again in FP2 on Saturday morning, but the pain proved too much and Aprilia confirmed before qualifying that he would sit out the rest of the weekend. MotoGP.com said he is targeting a return at the next round.

Martin arrived in Malaysia 10 points behind Marquez. Missing both the Sprint and the Grand Prix while his rival scored 34 points turned that into a 44 point gap.

Saturday: Alex Marquez on pole, Acosta wins a wet and dry Sprint

Alex Marquez beat his brother to pole by just 0.070 seconds with a 1:56.493, and Acosta completed the front row only 0.084 seconds off pole. Ai Ogura (Trackhouse) and Bezzecchi lined up fourth and fifth. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Johann Zarco (LCR Honda) came through Q1 and started 10th and eighth.

The Sprint was declared a flag to flag race when rain began to fall on lap 2. Alex Marquez was leading clearly when he slid off at Turn 14 on lap 3, unhurt. A few riders, including Joan Mir (Honda HRC), Iker Lecuona and Franco Morbidelli, pitted to switch to their wet bikes, but the rain never became heavy enough for that gamble to pay off. At the front, Acosta took the lead from Ogura in the closing laps and held on to win by just over half a second, his second Sprint victory. Marquez fought past Ogura for second and Bezzecchi also got by the Trackhouse rider for third.

Sprint top nine (the points scorers): Acosta, Marc Marquez, Bezzecchi, Ogura, Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46), Bagnaia, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM), Diogo Moreira (LCR Honda) and Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech3). That left Marquez 19 points clear of Martin and 52 clear of Bezzecchi going into Sunday.

Sunday: a masterclass from Marquez

Marquez got the holeshot from the middle of the front row. Alex Marquez tried to take the lead back at Turn 4 but ran wide, and from there the championship leader controlled the race. His lead grew steadily from 1.1 seconds on lap 9 to more than four seconds by the flag.

Acosta recovered from a slow start, quickly reeled in the Marquez brothers with a fastest lap, then passed Alex Marquez for second at Turn 9 on lap 10. Alex held on to third, 0.8 seconds clear of Ogura, who also finished fourth in the Sprint. Bezzecchi ran in the fight for the final podium place for much of the race, but a mistake at Turn 14 on the last lap let Bastianini through for fifth, and the Aprilia rider finished sixth.

According to MotoGP.com, it was Marquez's seventh Grand Prix win of 2026, his third in Malaysia and the 80th MotoGP victory of his career.

The title picture with three rounds left

Marquez leaves Sepang 44 points ahead of Martin and 67 ahead of Bezzecchi, with Qatar, then the final two rounds, still to come. MotoGP.com says the title is his in Qatar if he outscores Martin by 30 points and Bezzecchi by eight points there. Aprilia's hopes now rest on Martin returning in Qatar and Bezzecchi closing a gap that MotoGP.com called a monumental mountain to climb.

Hakim Danish: so close to a home podium

Malaysia's Hakim Danish (AEON Credit MT Helmets MSI) started the Moto3 race third, the first Malaysian on a Grand Prix front row since 2012, and fought for the podium all race. He ran as high as second at several points and was third at Turn 11 on the final lap, but Alvaro Carpe (Red Bull KTM Ajo) came back at Turn 14. Danish tried again at the final corner, ran wide and finished fourth.

Already crowned world champion, Maximo Quiles (CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar) won from pole by around three seconds for his 11th victory of the season. Veda Pratama (Honda Team Asia) was second, Carpe third and David Almansa (Intact GP) fifth, which strengthens his hold on second in the standings.

Moto2: Alonso leads an Aspar one two

David Alonso (CFMOTO RCB Aspar) won the Moto2 race in very hot conditions, his second win of 2026, despite a big rear end slide at Turn 14 with about three laps to go. Teammate and polesitter Daniel Holgado was second and rookie Angel Piqueras (QJMOTOR MSI) took his first Moto2 podium in third. In the title fight, Izan Guevara (Pramac Yamaha) finished fourth and championship leader Manuel Gonzalez (Intact GP) fifth, so the gap between them is now 3.5 points.
